Wendy Giaccaglia is thankful to know that half a world away, her mom is OK.

Wendy lives in England, and her mom, Sally, is a resident at The Nottingham. After Wendy’s father passed away, her mother talked about downsizing, selling their family home, and moving into an apartment. Wendy was concerned about her mother’s safety.

She said, “I would not be able to rest knowing that she’s living in an apartment with not knowing who lives next door, because that’s just how the world is now. I grew up seeing The Nottingham, and I thought this was the place that would make me feel really at ease. I just thought that it would be, in my mind, the perfect place for her to be, even though I knew it would be difficult because she doesn’t see herself as an older person.”

And she was correct; Sally was hesitant to the idea of living in a senior community at first. She said, “I didn’t think I belonged here! I don’t use a walker, I’m not in a wheelchair, I’m still healthy, so I was resistant at first.”

Sally had preconceived notions about senior living communities and told Wendy that she didn’t want to be told what to do or be forced to participate in community groups or events.

After speaking with close friends and Wendy about her concerns and considering the cost of living in an apartment versus living at The Nottingham, she changed her mind. She and Wendy talked about how she could do it on her terms and be as involved in community activities as she wanted.  Sally laughs about a particular conversation when Wendy said, “Mom, you’re a nurse, pull up your big girl panties, find a purpose, and get on with it.”

And get on with it, she did. Sally said that was the kick in the pants she needed to begin her next chapter over three years ago. Today, the same person who didn’t think community living was for her is in every group she can get into, is a member of the resident forum serving as the chair of life enrichment, attends all the events, and volunteers at The Nottingham.

“It really is what you make of it. The people who work here are so kind, and there is always something to do. When I lived at home, I loved going for walks. Here, I walk the halls each day, handing out flyers, delivering mail, and doing whatever else I can to be helpful. I’m a nurse, I love helping people, so instead of sitting around all day I find something to do here. And I’m busy! Each day I log about 6,000 steps. I love that each day I have a purpose.”
