Syracuse, NY (May 8, 2019)The Health Commissioner declared the flu is no longer prevalent in NYS, and Loretto’s dedicated approach to getting employees vaccinated this year won a national award from the National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit.

Older adults are particularly susceptible, and employees with the flu can have a significant impact on the operations of healthcare or any business. So, Loretto’s Infection Preventionist Vicky Lyman created a collaboration across multiple facilities and partners to offer:

  • On-site vaccination clinics on all three shifts,
  • Rolling carts with vaccination supplies for units who do not usually attend the clinics,
  • And incentives for all healthcare workers who received the influenza vaccine.

The program resulted in 843 of the 885 employees receiving their influenza vaccine on-site and 11 receiving vaccinations elsewhere, providing an employee influenza vaccination rate of 96%!

Lyman will accept the National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit award on behalf of Loretto at a ceremony on May 15 in Atlanta, GA. Lyman was also tapped to share the success of this program with the New York State Association of County Health Officials and the Heart of New York chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).
