October 10th is World Mental Health Day. It is an international day designated to focus on mental health awareness, education and advocacy. But, more important, it offers a wonderful opportunity for people to connect and learn about mental health together.
This year, more than ever, it is also an excellent chance for society to pause and recognize the mental health challenges that healthcare employees often face.
According to one study, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the prevalence of mental health issues globally among healthcare workers. An increasing number of people in healthcare are experiencing symptoms of disorders such as:
- post-traumatic stress disorder
- anxiety
- depression.
Despite this development, struggling healthcare professionals still fear the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Unfortunately, this stigma leads to apprehension when seeking the appropriate care, support and services they need.
Michelle Cuttler, Employee Coach at Loretto’s Human Resource Department, stresses the importance of individuals being open to help. She also emphasizes that you should never feel like you have to suffer alone. Whether you find help through therapy or confiding in a friend, it is valuable to talk with someone to provide support when you are overwhelmed and feeling anxious or depressed.
Cuttler also notes the value of taking care of yourself – and maintaining your mental health. She offers some helpful tips for doing so, highlighting how mental and physical health are often linked together. Personal care such as adequate sleep, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, finding a routine, and exercising are all vital components to your overall well-being.
Healthy habits are promoted to Loretto employees through initiatives such as our walking club, where employees have an opportunity to walk together, chat, and enjoy the fresh air.
“Do things that bring yourself joy,” Cuttler says. “Finding things you enjoy is one key aspect of self-care when it comes to mental health.”
Did you know that Loretto offers three free counseling sessions to employees? Through Loretto’s partnership with Healthcare Employee Assistance Program, (EAP), free sessions are available to our employees. And, they can often be extended – to help create and establish an ongoing relationship with a one-on-one counselor on a case-by-case basis. EAP also offers additional mental health services including many online self-help resources.
