“The day with the most light is the day we fight.” This is one of the taglines that the Alzhiemer’s Association uses to describe The Longest Day fundraiser and it’s so inspirational. Any day caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia can seem like the longest day. I know this because I watched my mom care for my dad for about 5 years before he succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease. I also know this because I have worked for over 25 years with the most dedicated caregivers at the Heritage as well as over 1500 residents and their families. Caregiving for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia is physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. Caregivers often put their own needs aside in order to focus on their loved ones.
The Longest Day – the summer solstice or day with the most light – is June 20th. On this day, people across the globe will fight to raise both awareness and funds to support the Alzheimer’s Association. This year will look a little different because of social distancing. But we can still fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s disease together even if it’s through virtual events.
We must remember that although many of our lives have slowed during this pandemic, Alzheimer’s disease is growing just as fast as it was before COVID, and those diagnosed with the disease and their loved ones need support now more than ever. So please consider hosting or participating in a virtual fundraiser. Let’s shine our light on The Longest Day and hope that next year we can be together again!
