Rooted in Community. Driven by our Mission.
For 100 years, Loretto has been more than a healthcare provider—we’ve been a cornerstone of the Central New York Community.
First diocesan home for the aged
In 1926 the Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese opens the first Loretto facility, Loretto Rest, and is the first diocesan home for the aged in North America.
Early advocate for change
Loretto helps found the American Association for the Aging and helps support the passage of Medicare, Medicaid, and the Older Americans Act.
First enriched living program in Central New York
Loretto opens the Bernardine Apartments in 1981 offering the region’s first enriched living program designed for older adults who need supportive services but do not require the intensity of skilled nursing care.
The establishment of the Community Residences Program
In response to rising demand for mental health support in our community, Loretto creates the program to provide safe and supportive living environments for individuals living with mental illness.
The first to provide a continuum of care
In 1988 Loretto developed and opened the region’s first and only continuum of care at The Nottingham that offers independent, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care services to meet the needs of older adults as they age in place.
Memory care for all
Loretto’s The Heritage is the only assisted living in facility in Central New York dedicated to Alzheimer’s and dementia care that accepts Medicaid.
First to offer PACE services in Central New York
Loretto is the only PACE program in the Central New York region helping on average 600 people who qualify for nursing home care to remain living in their homes.
Innovative rehabilitation services
Loretto developed a Restorative Care Unit (RCU), the first of its kind in Central New York, to care for those who have had recent heart surgery in a more home-like setting and reduce the risk of rehospitalization.
Helping build healthcare careers
Loretto developed and launched the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Apprenticeship Program, the first federally recognized LPN Apprenticeship in the nation in partnership with 1199SEIU. Developed to help frontline workers overcome the barriers of cost and accessibility to higher education by offering paid on-the-job training, free tuition, mentorship, and guaranteed employment, it has advanced the careers of 62 individuals to date.
Innovative Memory Care
Loretto offers advanced Memory Care Special Care Units in Syracuse and Auburn that features customized environments and specialized care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Montessori Living
Loretto is now one of only 42 facilities in the United States and 45 worldwide to offer a gold-level Montessori-inspired Lifestyle Community, and it is the only one to offer this care in Upstate New York. Montessori communities provide specialized, individualized care based on the residents' abilities, strengths, and expressed interests.
